There are many books out there that apply the lessons of life to business and exhort us to treat our careers as if it was a carefree weekend. Dr. Wasserman has flipped this concept on its head and challenges us to look at life as a new venture, filled with business challenges to be overcome. Based on the latest research of what makes new business and their founders successful, the reader is guided through a series of self reflective exercises to get at the heart of the challenges of life and given tools to overcome these challenges. Fast paced and inspiring, this book is a must read for anyone contemplating the next challenge in their life. We are reminded that we are the founders of our own lives and, just like the startups that grow into multi-billion dollar companies, we too can have rich fulfilling lives.
I just finished reading the book; it resonated so hard I couldn't stop until I was done. Some bits about the limits of introspection were like the proverbial "punch in the gut" and the gam zu l'tovah attitude was welcome throughout. One the one hand, knowing that many others before have experienced something similar is reassuring. There's advice and ideas for how to handle different circumstances. On the other hand, there's ample evidence that simply knowing that others have had certain issues doesn't prevent you from falling into those obstacles. So many other gems in the book from assumption checking, re-framing, managing uncertainty, confronting the difference between our perceptions and reality-- really enjoyed the whole thing.
My experience with "self-help" books (I read piles of them) turns on the number and quality of good examples provided. Here, drawing on business school case studies that I assume the author teaches in the MBA program, there are many good case studies to learn from. After reading, I feel like I took his class!
As Noam tells it, fairy tale endings rarely happen in start-up country. So, if you want to vastly improve your chances for that happy ending for your family, business, or non-profit venture, even if you're not in start-up mode, read and absorb the stories and lessons that Noam has compiled from his academic and business careers, as well as his personal life, in this extremely well-written book.
I strongly recommend this book to my executive coaching clients, friends and family. Noam Wasserman brings great insight to the process of decision making. He describes how we can allow emotions and habit patterns to adversely impact our choices. He offers thoughtful and constructive recommendations that empower people to reflect, manage and guide the direction of their lives.
always relevant material
Life Is A Startup takes a novel approach to offering practical, actionable advice for our daily lives. I had never thought that the challenges, experiences and best practices of entrepreneurs could help people understand what changes they should make in their lives and how to navigate making those changes. However, Professor Wasserman does a remarkable job creating powerful linkages between both worlds. The book is full of real-world stories from entrepreneurs and their startups which enables the reader to see the context behind the lessons these entrepreneurs have learned. The examples are fascinating and include some well-known companies as well as companies that are not known at all. The parallels between what we all face in our relationships, careers, etc. and what founders and startups face are uncanny.Importantly, Professor Wasserman includes what I found to be a very useful feature in what he calls "Pause for Reflection". In these sections (included in most chapters), he asks readers a series of questions about their own lives and situations related to the Chapter topic. This is a terrific technique as it gets folks to reflect on what they have just read and how it applies uniquely to them.Overall, an excellent book that uses a novel lens to help people envision how they can change their lives and how to go about doing so.
This book is must for anyone considering their current career stage and their next career move. After completing the book, I re-read a couple of sections that were most pertinent to my career.First, the discussion about creating a business with a partner who is a family member. I recently started working with my wife to launch her new startup. It’s been rewarding as well as challenging. The book covers this, including the statistics (bad news mostly!) as well as advice (not assume equality, agree roles). That was very helpful.Second, the rich vs king dilemma, was extremely well laid out and I found it very much relevant to my own career. One of the key things Wasserman urges is to choose between being a king of a smallish company or 'rich' with a potentially larger company but less control and equity. This framework resonated with me very much. It’s a very tough decision. Life makes us want to be both rich and king! It takes a lot of effort and self reflection to choose between the two. I hope the book will help me if and when I get to the stage of making the call next time.Lastly, the book is extremely well written and easy to read. The anecdotes Wasserman provides were relevant for my personal as well professional life. In that aspect the book reminded me of Christensen's 'How to Measure Your Life'. Those 'personal life' angles were thought provoking and lingered in my mind longer after I finished reading it.
