From the Inside Flap
"Has the potential to do for academic honesty what Strunk and White did for prose style. . . . Lipson’s guidelines, if followed across the disciplines, would virtually guarantee that students would do work that is not just academically honest, but academically sound as well."--Robert Kaster, Princeton University As college deans and faculty are well aware, cheating and plagiarism have become an epidemic. Some students deliberately download papers, while others break rules they simply don’t understand. Unfortunately, there have been no reliable guides to aid students, faculty, and teaching assistants in navigating these challenging issues. Now there’s help. Charles Lipson, a distinguished scholar and teacher who has coached thousands of students in the basics of academic honesty, provides clear, accessible, and often humorous advice on all aspects of the topic, whether in connection with papers and exams or study groups and labs. In the first part of the book, Lipson outlines three core principles of academic honesty and explores how these principles inform all aspects of college work. He discusses plagiarism in detail, outlining an ingenious note-taking system and offering guidelines for quoting and paraphrasing. Careful attention is paid to online research, including the perils of "dragging and dropping" text without proper citation. These chapters include numerous highlighted tips for students on how to work honestly and study effectively. The second part of the book gives a full account of citation styles in the humanities, social sciences, and physical and biological sciences, as well as in pre-professional studies. Filled with examples, these chapters show students exactly how to cite books, journals, edited volumes, Web sites, online publications, and much more—in all of the major citation styles. By clearly communicating the basic principles of academic honesty and exploring these principles in action, Doing Honest Work in College promotes genuine learning and academic success. This must-have reference helps faculty and students alike address questions about academic honesty before problems arise, making it the book students will turn to for advice from their first class to their last exam.

I required this of my first-year college writing students. Some were a little put off by the repetition and the "I'm just one of you" tone of the author, but most felt the information was valuable, and, for some, it was brand new. It's one of the few books that speaks to plagiarism in terms of the value of honesty instead of the threat of punishment. I'm glad my students have it, and I'm encouraging them to hold on to it for its help with other courses, since it gives great info about study groups, lab work, take-home exams, etc.
OK
This book was purchase for my daughter summer class. i know she was excited about the price of the book.
I require this book of my university writing students and recommend it to others. Like Rayne's students, mine find the author's tone off putting at times. Tone aside, students have told me they find the information itself accessible and valuable for the short (i.e., my class) and long term (i.e., their other courses), prompting me to keep this book on my syllabus each term. Many of my students confide they've been taught the MLA citation as the best--or only--citation style for ALL of their papers. Therefore, to learn about a range of citation styles and to have a brief introduction to each has helped my students understand that ACADEMIA--not just English teachers--values and encourages writers to credit their sources. My science and engineering students have been particularly vocal in saying the book's discussions beyond MLA and APA citations help them feel validated in the writing they produce. While my students like the fact that they now have one book that contains a snapshot of eight citation styles, I like that the book starts from the point that all writers in the academy cite sources as a way of entering, building upon, and continuing the conversations of our respective fields. Consequently, as Rayne observes, the book is not about punishment (as so many discussions on citations are or become); rather, it's a call for students to cite their sources in order to engage authentically in the work of the academy.Certainly there are limits to the book (e.g., citation samples, being brief, oversimplify some styles), but DOING HONEST WORK offers a springboard for further conversations and/or readings about one of the most fundamental principles of academic work.
I teach online college freshman level in the social sciences, and often struggle with the issue of plagiarism and lack of knowledge of the student upon entering college of the various academic research writing styles. I am also doing post graduate work in the education field and am currently involved in a research project on this problem in education. I found the book a valuable resource, and easy to understand. The book gives a basic broad view of the different styles of writing for the various disciplines, as well as basic information on proper citations and the meaning of plagiarism. Great book for a college freshman just starting out, or academic that works with various styles of writing.
I cannot say enough about how invaluable this book is! As a high school English teacher, I have recommended this book to students and colleagues alike. It is a practical, clear, and comprehensive look at citation from a number of different styles. Not only do I use it in my classroom, but I have also shared it with members of my graduate courses. Everyone can benefit from some portion of the book; I have had it out on display in my classroom for the past week and have had numerous students pick it up and say things like "Wow, this actually makes it [citation] so much easier." A handful of them have actually gone out and purchased the book as well- that in itself speaks volumes!
This book is great guidance for any professor who wants to educate, warn or correct students in their academic behavior. I plan to list the book as recommended reading in all my classes this fall. Every college library should have a copy.Even ethically-challenged students will be able to understand the clear and easy-to-read explanations of academic honesty.
